Participating Artists

KATHY BATTISTI is a dedicated silversmith and the creative force behind SDSoulStones, a jewelry line that beautifully marries the artistry of semi-precious gemstones with their healing properties. Largely self-taught, Kathy has refined her skills through both personal exploration and sessions with experienced silversmiths, enabling her to craft pieces that resonate on both an aesthetic and spiritual level. Each creation in the SDSoulStones collection reflects Kathy’s deep connection to the natural energies of the stones, making her jewelry not only visually striking but also a tool for personal well-being. Discover the transformative power of SD Soul Stones at the upcoming art fair.

PIERRE BOUNAUD is a ceramic artist whose work is a testament to the transformative power of art and science. Born in the picturesque Provence region of France, Pierre’s academic pursuit in chemistry was overtaken by his passion for ceramics. He approaches his creations with the precision of a scientist and the soul of an artist, drawing inspiration from the subtle elements that compose our world.

His ceramic creations are primarily shaped from porcelain clay, utilizing a mix of wheel-throwing and hand-building methods. The pieces undergo several firings in a ceramic kiln to attain the intended surface design. Pierre’s extensive experience fuels his passion for experimentation, steering him towards the discovery of novel glazes and ceramic techniques that elevate his artistic expression.

Pierre’s unique artwork has been featured in galleries throughout the United States.

DESOLINA. My love of art and creating it has been a life long journey. My tools of choice are  brushes, color shaper, charcoal, sharpie and anything else lying around that might add to texture along with acrylic paint. In creating an art piece, I often like to make a statement or have a theme. For instance, I created the series “Mother Earth.”

In appreciation of our planet and especially its continuing changing climate, my focus is to bring attention to its beauty through paint, line and color.

MISSY GALANG, originally from Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines, has had a lifelong passion for painting. Though her heart was always in art, she initially chose a career in marketing, believing in the “starving artist” stereotype. In 2014, she moved to the United States to pursue an MBA, further advancing her marketing career. However, after hitting a glass ceiling and experiencing burnout, Missy decided to reignite her artistic passion.

Fully committing to her art, Missy has since created a body of work that has been acquired by private collectors in both Asia and the US. Today, she dedicates herself to storytelling through her paintings, using her brush to craft vibrant, original narratives.

M. HALPRIN started painting in the early 1990’s. Primarily in the Impressionist style – landscapes and still life works, especially drawn to the beach and nature. She loves the bright colors and complex textures. She also loves to create and use patterns for the geometrical and nature glassware she enjoys doing. Her painting background distinguishes her works from others with vivid colors that are reminiscent of nature and the ocean. She has learned many techniques, including crackle, pot melt, and murini. She has created many wall hangings for her home, frit stretches that sit in stands, and now also do garden art, some of which you will see at this year’s Talmadge Artist Tour.

LIZ KENNEDY. “Risk and surrender” are some of my watchwords. I am ready to learn, to fail and to try other flavors besides “pretty”— like illogical, corny, imperfect. The shapes and feelings of people, their bodies, their faces always draw me in, as well as the natural world. I am inspired by the attitudes, bravery and work of artists like Maggie Hambling, Frank Auerbach, David Park, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Fairfield Porter and Alice Neel. My work is unique because of the way personal way I absorb the world – I respect what I take in and seek to honor what I take in with bravery and attention. lizkennedyart.com

Steven McGovney
Tammy Camarot

McGovney-Camarot Studio. Steven has worked in clay for over 50 years, creating both whimsical and contemporary sculptures.

Tammy has developed a Japanese felting technique in wool and silk to create both representative and abstract designs of luminosity and color.

THIA NEVIUS. I’ve been teaching at the Athenaeum for a very long time which is a testament to the fact that I have enjoyed it very much.  The students always seem eager to learn and come from all backgrounds which makes it interesting for me.  I never thought I wanted to teach at all but I seem to have fallen into it throughout my life and it has come to feel as a natural experience .  Before 911, through the Athenaeum, I took a group of watercolor students to France and we had a glorious time.  To this day, I still am friends with some of those students.

I received my MFA from Colorado State University where my graduate work consisted of large abstract paintings.  The MFA afforded me the possibility to teach art at The Bishops School which I did for many years.  Before that and after graduating I proceeded to get a job with the opera where my paint brushes were a yard long and the paint came in 5 gallon buckets.  It was a very memorable experience.

In the past I have explored many other mediums besides watercolor: printmaking, pottery, oil and acrylic painting.  At present I find enjoyment working small and teaching watercolor and occasionally drawing.  The people I teach will never know how much pleasure it gives me to see them want to learn the medium of watercolor and how much they improve.  I feel like we become friends during that time.  It will be a new experience for all of us using zoom!

Samuel Perry As a lifelong artist, I am always looking for the next opportunity to translate their everyday experiences into artistic expressions. My approach and output are constantly evolving as I hone their personal style. However, currently focusing on abstract, I work hard to ensure they do not repeat myself. No matter what, I approach each work with complete enthusiasm and total dedication.

Barbara Stanley My main medium is oil on canvas.  I also work in watercolor and collage.  My art is figurative with a surreal sensitivity.  I am interested in what shapes us, how we are influenced, and how we adapt and grow.  I understand that we are much more connected than we realize.  Dreams, experiences, and images inspire my art.  My intuition chooses the universal symbols I use in my art.  Colors play a vital role in my art because they are part of the psychology of humans.  As the art develops it takes on a life of its own.  The process of making art helps me assimilate the world.  I am an alchemist seeking to get the right combination of ingredients – color & image –  so that art can nurture the soul.

Teresa Vallejos is a San Diego native who has always had a passion for the arts. Becoming the sole provider for her daughter at a young age she couldn’t immediately follow her dreams.  She pursued success in business and today she is the Director of Strategy & eCommerce for a major U.S. corporation. Through the chaos of single working motherhood in her twenties and early thirties, she always found ways to create – designing handbags and jewelry, taking on interior design projects, and drawing and painting every chance she had.

Today, blending her love for painting and design, mixed media and abstract art has become her passion. As an emerging artist she is consistently garnering commission projects for business and home spaces and has recently been invited into local and international galleries and to participate in a group showing at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art.
